The following is an excerpt from page 107 of Charles Spurgeon, The Prince of Preachers by Christian Timothy George. It is from one of Spurgeon’s latter day sermons.
“There must be a revival of the old gospel preaching. We must have it back. Our ministers must return to the same gospel which John Bunyan and George Whitefield preached — a biblical gospel. We cannot embrace these new philosophical gospels that do not believe in the miracles of the Bible or the power of the resurrection: we must bring them together — these false gospels, these geological gospels — and do with them as the people of Ephesus did with the evil books — we must burn them and hear the preaching of Paul once again. We can do without the theory of evolution, but we cannot do without the ancient gospel. We can do without fancy speeches and fine eloquence, but we cannot do without Christ, and Christ crucified. Lord, revive thy work in your world by giving us the old-fashioned gospel back in our pulpits.”
We can anchor the above words with The Bible and in particular the following verse:
“O LORD, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy” (Habakkuk 3:2).
